Earliest known archaeological evidence of Americans found in Monte Verde, Chile
Monte Verde, Chile is a very interesting archaeological site. First discovered in 1976, the site is about 500 miles south of Santiago and has yielded artifacts of a tiny settlement of 20 to 30 people living in a dozen huts along a tiny creek. Aside from artifacts, a wide variety of midden has also been unearthed from the site indicating these people survived on extinct species of llama, gomphotheres, shellfish, vegetables and nuts. In 1979, Tom Dillehay conducted radiocarbon dating of the b

At the beach... Seafood and More!
It seems like forever since we were enjoying our luxury vacation for Molly and Bridget's birthday, but it has only been a month. Food is central to our family, and so planning the food for our beach getaway was as important as who was invited and what we would do. Vacation meal planning takes a little extra work since whether you vacation in resort areas or in the wilds, often ethnic ingredients, exotic spices, fresh herbs and produce, and meat or seafood can be difficult to find or expensive and you

Dr. Seuss and Dr. Einstein
Some years ago, when an insect called the thrips -- singular and plural -- was in the news for defoliating sugar maples in New England, I noted in my Boston Globe science column that thrips are very odd beasts. Some species of thrips give birth to live young, some lay eggs, and at least one species of switch-hitting thrips has it both ways. Not even the wildest product of Dr. Seuss's imagination, I said -- the Moth-Watching Sneth, for example, a bird that's so big it scares people to death,

Wooden Ships
I picked up this WIP this week: The Workbasket's "Bay Sampler." The fiber is The Thread Gatherer's Silk and Colors. I'm glad I kitted it up then (about four years ago; the thread has gone up about 70% since then--yikes. Which leads me to think, since needlework supplies have performed better than many stocks, it may be a very good investment. So tell your Significant Others that "it's not my stash, it's my hedge against inflation."). Here's a picture of the Marine Biological Laboratories in Woo

Chapter I. Solar Creation Myths
Chapter I Solar Creation Myths IN the literature of celestial mythology, the legends that relate to the creation of the chief luminaries occupy no tiny part. It was natural that primitive man should at an early date speculate on the great problem of the creation of the visible universe, and especially in regard to the source whence sprang the Sun and the Moon. This great question, of such vital interest to every nations since the dawn of history, presents a problem that is still unsolved

The Smell of the Sea
I did not make it to Damascus this weekend, but made it here instead. I just finished washing every of the formerly living sea creatures and uninhabited shells. I was amazed at the abundance of tide pools in Aqaba, and my kids were delighted to play on the shore for hours on end, collecting every sorts of items. I have lots to say about Aqaba but will keep that for tomorrow. I'm a little sun/wind burned and ready to put my head on a soft pillow.

An evening by the seaside..Sepang GoldCoast
Since we are off for Labour Day today, I suggested to Hubby that perhaps we should go for a leisurely steer to Sepang Gold Coast. I have been eager to visit this place after reading Jackson's post on his previous visits. Together with my mom-in-law, we decided to spend the evening there followed by a steamboat dinner by the seaside. The journey took us more than an hour and 15 minutes using the Elite Highway heading towards KLIA and turning off at the F1 circuit. You have to steer pass a few
